Ripstop fabric uses a reinforcing yarn pattern intended to help limit the spread of a small tear. The visible grid is a construction feature, not a guarantee that every ripstop fabric has the same strength, weight or weather performance.
How ripstop construction works
Reinforcing yarns are woven into the base fabric at regular intervals. If the fabric is punctured or torn, this grid can help resist further propagation. Actual performance depends on the fibre, yarn, weave, weight, coating and quality of the specific material.
Common uses
Depending on its specification, ripstop may be considered for bags, covers, outdoor equipment, linings, lightweight shelters and other projects where low weight and tear control are useful. A product suitable for one of these applications is not automatically suitable for all of them.
What to compare
- Composition and base-cloth construction
- Width and GSM
- Coating or finish
- Waterproof or water-resistant test information
- Abrasion and tear data where available
- Care and storage requirements
- Colour and current availability
Planning and sewing
Choose thread, needle, seam construction and reinforcement for the actual fabric and load. Needle holes and unsealed seams can affect water protection. Test stitching on an offcut before production where possible.
“Ripstop” describes a construction. It does not by itself confirm waterproofing, UV resistance, load rating or safety suitability.
