Fabric listings often include width, GSM and composition, but those details only become useful when you understand how they affect a project. This guide explains what each specification means and what to confirm before ordering.

Fabric width

Width is the usable measurement across the roll, usually stated in metres. It determines how many panels can be cut side by side and how much fabric a pattern or project may need. A wider fabric can reduce joins and waste, but width alone does not indicate strength, weight or suitability.

Before calculating quantities, confirm the listed width for the exact product. Allow for seams, hems, pattern placement and cutting tolerance. For fitted items, covers or repeated pieces, a cutting plan is more reliable than estimating from surface area alone.

What GSM means

GSM means grams per square metre. It describes fabric mass over a standard area. A higher GSM usually means more material by weight, but it does not automatically mean a fabric is stronger, more waterproof or better for every job. Fibre type, weave, yarn, coating and construction also matter.

Use GSM as one comparison point among products with similar construction. A lightweight coated fabric can perform differently from a heavier uncoated fabric, while two fabrics with the same GSM may have different strength, drape and abrasion behaviour.

Fabric composition

Composition identifies the fibres used in the material, such as polyester, nylon, cotton or a blend. Fibre choice can influence feel, moisture behaviour, dimensional stability, care and performance. A coating or backing may add further properties that are not explained by fibre content alone.

Check whether a listing describes the base cloth, the coating, or both. If a specification is missing or unclear, ask before relying on it for a demanding application.

How to compare fabrics

  • Start with the intended use and conditions.
  • Confirm the product’s actual width, not a category-wide assumption.
  • Compare GSM only alongside construction, composition and finish.
  • Check whether water resistance, UV resistance or other performance has a stated test or rating.
  • Order a sample or request advice when colour, handle or exact suitability is critical.

Planning your order

Sublime Designs sells fabric by the metre, with full rolls available for suitable orders. For help estimating quantities, include your project dimensions, number of pieces, preferred fabric and any seam or finish requirements when you contact us.

Specifications differ by product. Always use the confirmed information on the individual product page or supplied technical documentation.
