This glossary explains common terms used when comparing fabrics. Definitions are general: the confirmed specification for the exact product takes priority.
Construction and measurement
- Composition
- The fibres or polymers used in the fabric or coating.
- GSM
- Grams per square metre, a measure of mass per unit area. It is not a complete measure of strength or quality.
- Width
- The cross-roll measurement. Ask whether the quoted width includes selvedges or coated edges.
- Selvedge
- The finished or reinforced edge formed during weaving.
- Warp and weft
- The lengthwise and crosswise yarn systems in woven fabric.
- Ripstop
- A construction with reinforcing yarns intended to help limit tear propagation.
Surface and performance
- Coating
- A layer applied to a base cloth to change properties such as permeability, handling or cleanability.
- PU
- Polyurethane; a broad coating family whose performance varies by formulation and construction.
- PVC
- Polyvinyl chloride; used in coated or film materials with widely varying weight, stiffness and finish.
- Water-resistant
- Indicates some resistance to water penetration under stated conditions; it does not mean impervious.
- Waterproof
- A claim that should be tied to a defined material and test method. Finished seams and damage can change performance.
- Abrasion
- Surface wear caused by rubbing.
- Tear strength
- Resistance to the growth of a tear under a specified test.
- UV resistance
- Resistance to degradation from ultraviolet exposure under defined conditions; it is not permanent immunity to sunlight.
Ordering and production
- Batch or lot
- A manufacturing group that may help identify material produced under related conditions.
- Roll quantity
- For current Sublime Designs ordering, 30 m and above is considered a roll quantity, subject to availability and final terms.
- Usable width
- The portion available for finished pattern pieces after unsuitable edges or allowances are excluded.
- Directional fabric
- Material whose appearance or performance requires pattern pieces to face a consistent direction.
Terms do not replace technical data, testing or professional design requirements.
