Awnings, shade panels and gazebos place fabric under tension and exposure. The correct choice depends on the structure, weather, expected lifespan, installation and how the finished item will be handled.

Define the structure and use

Record whether the project is fixed or temporary, flat or shaped, tensioned or loosely fitted, and how often it will be installed, folded or transported. Confirm the frame dimensions and attachment points before estimating fabric.

Properties to compare

  • Composition, base-cloth construction, width and GSM
  • Coating or finish and confirmed water-performance information
  • UV or weathering test information where relevant
  • Tear and abrasion behaviour around edges and hardware
  • Flexibility for folding, rolling or installation
  • Colour, surface finish and cleaning requirements

Plan the finished construction

Seams, hems, eyelets, ropes, webbing, poles and drainage affect performance. Water can collect where shape or tension creates low points. Reinforce attachment areas and confirm that the joining method suits the exact fabric.

Prototype critical details

Test a seam, hem, eyelet or welded joint before production. Check how the material handles folds, tension and hardware, and assess the complete structure where wind or failure could create a hazard.

A fabric category does not confirm wind loading, fire performance, UV life or structural safety. Obtain relevant specifications and professional design input where required.
