Ordering fabric starts with the finished project, not only its overall length and width. A reliable estimate allows for the usable fabric width, pattern pieces, seams, hems, orientation, matching, testing and a sensible contingency.
Start with the finished dimensions
List every piece that must be cut. Include panels, gussets, boxing, flaps, straps, reinforcement pieces and any duplicate parts. Record finished dimensions separately from cutting dimensions.
Confirm the usable fabric width
The quoted roll width is not always the same as the usable width. Selvedges, coated edges, flaws or a directional finish may reduce the area available for cutting. For current Sublime Designs stock, confirm the exact product width before calculating: Ripstop products may be 1.8 m wide while other current fabrics may be 1.5 m wide, but the individual product specification remains authoritative.
Create a cutting layout
- Add seam and hem allowances to every piece.
- Keep directional pieces facing the required way.
- Allow for pattern matching where applicable.
- Nest pieces across the usable width.
- Total the length occupied by the layout.
Add a practical allowance
Allow for test cuts, joining trials, handling errors and future repairs according to the project. Complex production work may need a larger allowance than a simple rectangular cover.
One-metre cuts and larger orders
Sublime Designs supplies fabric in one-metre increments. Current pricing is kept consistent across quantities while the bulk-order solution is being finalised. Orders of 30 m and above are considered roll quantities; confirm availability, continuous length and final commercial terms before placing a production order.
Quantity examples are planning aids, not guarantees. Final usage depends on your pattern, construction and the usable width of the exact fabric supplied.
